Vaccines Work -- When You Take Them

Failure to Immunize Responsible for Measles Outbreaks

Recent times have seen an incredible amount of attention given to the debate over the efficacy and safety of vaccines. “Anti-vaxxer” has become a mainstream meme. Meanwhile, scientists now believe that a failure to immunize children against measles has caused the biggest outbreak in that disease in decades.

Vaccines Injury Only a Small Fraction of Recipients

Running contrary to the impassioned arguments of anti-vaxxers is a database that offers hard facts on vaccinations in America. Maintained by the National Vaccine Compensation Program, the database shows that in the past dozen years in the United States, people have received about 126 million doses of vaccines against measles. This is a disease that was once responsible for epidemics, killing almost 500 people per year. Through all of those 125 million vaccinations, only 284 people filed claims of harm from those immunizations through the federal program created to compensate those injured by vaccines. While about half those claims were dismissed, the other half were compensated.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program was launched in 1988. It’s a no-fault system established through federal law and it offers a forum for claims of harm from vaccines. The program currently covers claims arising from 15 childhood vaccines as well as the seasonal flu shot. Over the past 30 years, the program has awarded claims to almost 7000 people harmed by vaccines.
