Belviq/Belviq XR is a weight loss drug prescribed for weight management in adults with medical conditions resulting from obesity. What is Belviq/Belviq XR?
In 2012, the FDA approved Belviq/Belviq XR (lorcaserin) for use in weight management in obese individuals. The medication helps control appetite by interfering with chemical signals, making people feel fuller after having eaten smaller amounts of food. In conjunction with diet and exercise, Belviq is prescribed to treat obesity. Belviq may also be prescribed to obese patients that have other conditions linked to obesity including diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
What is Happening with Belviq/Belviq XR?
The FDA is alerting the public that results from a clinical trial assessing safety show a possible increased risk of cancer with the weight management medicine Belviq, Belviq XR (lorcaserin). At this time, the cause of the cancer is uncertain, and the FDA cannot conclude that lorcaserin contributes to the cancer risk. However, they wanted to make the public aware of this potential risk. They are continuing to evaluate the clinical trial results and will communicate our final conclusions and recommendations when they have completed their review.
The FDA has also recommended that health care professionals should consider if the benefits of taking lorcaserin are likely to exceed the potential risks when deciding whether to prescribe or continue patients on lorcaserin. Patients currently taking lorcaserin should talk to their health care professionals about the potential increased risk of cancer with use of lorcaserin.
