Vaccine Injury Rally in Washington DC

THOUSANDS RALLY IN WASHINGTON FOR VACCINE INJURY AWARENESS

On Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, the Vaccine Injury Epidemic Event, organized by the nonprofit group, Crazymothers, held and was attended by about 3,000 people at the National Mall in Washington. Their aim was to raise awareness what they believe is an epidemic of vaccine injury in America.

Founder, Hillary Simpson told The Epoch Times that the event is organized to bring doctors lawyers, scientists, legislators, and mothers together to address the vaccine issue from every angle. Her son had a severe reaction after receiving several vaccinations. She made a video describing what happened, estimating that she heard from thousands of parents who reported similar symptoms to her son’s. Common symptoms in the reports were very high fevers, signs of gastrointestinal issues, swelling of the brain and seizures.

Anti-Vaxxer Movement Has Been Widely Discredited

This year, New York became the fifth state to disallow any religious or philosophical objections to receiving vaccines. Jimmy Kimmel, who used his show on multiple occasions to discredit concerns about vaccine safety/risk, implied in a segment with Dr. Oz that none of these parents were rational.

However, concerns remain widespread. The New York Times, citing a 2011 study found a quarter of American parents had serious concerns about vaccines and that 30% worried that they might cause learning disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder.

The event coincided with the 33rd anniversary of the enactment of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA). The NCVIA eliminated manufacturer liability for vaccine casualties and created a government compensation program instead Since its inception the number of reported tripled, and the court has paid out over $4 billion in compensation for vaccine injuries.

Vaccine Injury Monitoring Systems

The two means of monitoring adverse reactions to vaccines by the United States are the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD).

VAERS is a passive surveillance system to detect vaccine safety issues, anyone can file a VAERS report and physicians are supposed to report any adverse event following vaccination.

The VSD is a collaboration between the CDC and private health care organizations. Electronic health data for millions of people is analyzed for adverse health events following vaccination. Critics have pointed out that this system is not open for independent analysis. It is recommended that more awareness around the likelihood of vaccine injury, how to diagnose, properly assess vaccine injury, and also report to VAERS.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program was launched in 1988. It’s a no-fault system established through federal law and it offers a forum for claims of harm from vaccines. The program currently covers claims arising from 15 childhood vaccines as well as the seasonal flu shot. Over the past 30 years, the program has awarded claims to almost 7000 people harmed by vaccines.
